Giants make first offseason roster move, add starting pitcher from Rockies

Searching for a manager and general manager and watching the World Series did not stop Farhan Zaidi from tinkering yet again with the roster.

The Giants’ latest reclamation project, and first of the offseason, is Tyler Anderson, a lefty who was claimed off waivers from Colorado on Wednesday. To make room on the roster, the Giants designated Kyle Barraclough for assignment.

Anderson is coming off major knee surgery that wiped out his 2019 season after just five starts and is expected to keep him sidelined for at least part of spring training. A 2011 first-round pick out of Oregon, Anderson burst onto the major league scene in 2016, when he put up a 3.54 ERA — with Colorado — in 19 starts, striking out 99 in 114 1/3 innings.

He regressed in 2017 and was victimized by the home run in 2018, giving up a major league-high 30 in 176 innings, in which he posted a 4.55 ERA.

The 29-year-old, once healthy, will join the wide-open fight for the rotation alongside Tyler Beede, Shaun Anderson, Dereck Rodriguez and Conner Menez.

Barraclough, the righty reliever, was at times electric, at more times wild in his eight innings, in which he allowed two earned runs, struck out 10 and walked nine.
