Cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon has had a terrific start to the 2019 season. That’s why Niners fans held their collective breath on Sunday when Witherspoon left in the second half and never returned after sustaining an injury to his foot.

Making matters worse Witherspoon’s replacement, Jason Verrett, was burned immediately by Steelers receiver Diontae Johnson for a 37-yard touchdown.

The 49ers did not provide an official update after the game, only saying that Witherspoon would receive an MRI on Monday. The good news, Witherspoon does not think the injury will keep him out for very long.

“I don’t think it’s serious,” Witherspoon said while wearing a walking boot. “Just from my self-examination in playing the game for a long time.”

Witherspoon said he believes he’ll be good to return in Week 4 after the upcoming bye week, which comes at a good time for the cornerback.

Witherspoon was the fourth ranked cornerback in the NFL through two games according to Pro Football Focus.
