Giants claim A’s infielder as another option

The September additions are not confined to the Giants’ own system.

San Francisco claimed infielder Corban Joseph from Oakland on Tuesday, bringing a 30-year-old lefty bat in to get a major league look.

Bruce Bochy told reporters in St. Louis that Joseph would mainly be used to spell Evan Longoria, who hasn’t really had a backup since Pablo Sandoval went down. Joseph also could be used at second, where he played most of his games this season, as both Mauricio Dubon and Donovan Solano are righties.

The well-traveled Joseph killed lefties this season at the hitters’ haven that was the Pacific Coast League in 2019.

In 97 games in Triple-A Las Vegas, Joseph batted .371 with 13 home runs. Those numbers weren’t replicated in limited time with the A’s, slashing .189/.225/.324 in 11 games.

Joseph, a fourth-round pick in 2008 of the Yankees, has bounced around quite a bit, from the Yankees to Braves to Orioles to Nationals to Oakland, and now is trading sides of the Bay.

In the corresponding move, the Giants moved Sandoval to the 60-day injured list.
