The NFL free-agent frenzy is underway as the negotiation period has begun just two days before the new league year on Wednesday. The Niners began the first day of negotiations with the reported signing of linebacker Kwon Alexander to a lucrative four-year contract. Follow the signing of Alexander, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen discussed the Niners as a team that could be linked to another high-priced free agent.

Bell is a name that has been linked to the Niners for a couple years now. Before the signing of Jerick McKinnon, some believed Bell would be a good fit in Kyle Shanahan’s offense.

This past season, the Niners were able to get solid production out of almost all the running backs they deployed. With more glaring needs, the idea that the Niners will be serious players for Bell is curious, especially with the current financial commitment to Jerick McKinnon, who is one of the highest paid running backs in the NFL.

Bell, 27, sat out all of last season while holding out for a new contract. Bell is a three-time Pro Bowler, and finished third in the NFL in rushing in 2017 (1291 yards) and second in yards from scrimmage (1,946). He’s expected to command a deal worth $10.6 million per year according to Spotrac.
