The San Diego Padres have agreed to a deal with third baseman Manny Machado worth $300 million for the next 10 years, according to multiple reports including ones from Jeff Passan and Ken Rosenthal.

Shortly after the news broke, Padres executive Ron Fowler denied that there’s a deal in place.

Rosenthal cleared things up, chalking Fowler’s comments to “semantics” and the fact that the deal isn’t official. The veteran MLB reporter stood by his report that there is an agreement on financial terms.

If the terms are accurate, the deal would be the biggest free agent contract in the history of American sports.
Machado, 26, is a four-time All-Star, and ranks 13th among all players with 168 home runs since 2013. His 203 doubles are good for ninth over that stretch.
Machado was traded to the Dodgers at the deadline last season, after spending his first six and a half years with the Orioles. Machado can play both 3B and SS, and won the Gold Glove in both 2013 and 2015.
