The A’s will soon be the only professional sports team in Oakland, and Oakland native Marshawn Lynch wants to make sure they’re not going anywhere.
Lynch spoke to the Oakland city council on Wednesday evening, and expressed his desire for the city not to lose what will soon be their only team.
“We’re losing the Warriors,” Lynch said. “We’re losing the Raiders. Best not lose the A’s. Appreciate it.”
The A’s recently announced their plans to open a new stadium at Howard Terminal, after years of trying to leave the antiquated Oakland Coliseum. A’s fans have been through this before, however, with the team making a half-dozen announcements over the years about their plans to build new stadiums elsewhere in the city, none of which were able to get past the theoretical stages.
The most recent example of this was the proposed Laney College site, the first location publicly floated by new A’s President Dave Kaval. The organization was ultimately unable to get approval from the Laney College board.
There is fear that if the A’s continue to strike out on their hopes to build a new ballpark in the city of Oakland, they will begin to look to move elsewhere, something that has been hinted at in the past.
Lynch wants to make sure that doesn’t happen, and that the city isn’t left without a professional sports team in the near future.
