Richard Sherman cofounds daily fantasy site

Richard Sherman is investing in the world of fantasy sports.

On Thursday, Sherman announced the launching of a new app, Daily Number. The 49ers cornerback is both a co-founder and chief brand ambassador, joining CEO Tom McAuley. Daily Number will have paid contests in 23 states, according to ESPN.

The idea behind the site is distinct from other daily fantasy apps: participants will select a lineup of seven players, and their cumulative point total will compete against a predetermined number of points. There is a star-rating system for players. When constructing your lineup, you can pick whichever players you want, but the more stars they have, the fewer prizes you receive if you beat the “daily number.” The fewer stars, the better prize. The daily number is determined based on available players and matchups.

“Daily Number is a game-changer,” Sherman said in a release. “I’ve been pitched numerous DFS opportunities, but nothing has even come close to comparing to Daily Number. I’m extremely excited to be a founding partner and look forward to playing an active role in helping the company grow during this very dynamic time in our industry.”

Sherman is one of the first known athletes to invest in a fantasy site.

“We’re simplifying the DFS format for the everyday sports fan while maintaining the core gameplay principals that have made fantasy sports so massively popular,” McAuley said in a release. “We are driven by the opportunity to develop a proprietary platform and customer database that will be extremely valuable to many industry stakeholders as sports gaming continues to evolve in the United States.”
