Julian Fernandez to undergo Tommy John surgery

LOS ANGELES — Two days after being placed on the 60-day disabled list, Julian Fernandez will miss the entire season to undergo Tommy John Surgery.

“He’s going to have surgery,” Bochy said. “Julian Fernandez, after getting a second opinion, will have surgery on Thursday in Arizona and Dr. Gary Waslewski will perform the surgery.”

After 7.1 innings of work this spring, Fernandez initially hit the 10-day disabled list with a UCL sprain. Fernandez received a second opinion on Friday from Dr. Waslewski, who determined he’d need to undergo Tommy John surgery. His procedure is scheduled for March 5.

Although Fernandez began the spring with a pair of four-run appearances, where he was only able to record one out, he gradually settled in. He allowed only two runs over his last five innings of the spring with seven strikeouts. All told, he owned a 13.50 ERA with 12 strikeouts over eight appearances.

Equipped with the ability to consistently hit triple-digit velocity, the Giants hoped to hang onto Fernandez. However, as a Rule 5 Draft selection, the Giants would’ve needed to keep Fernandez on their major league roster the entire season or offer him back to the Colorado Rockies. Now that he’s on the disabled list, the Giants can wait a little longer before making a decision regarding Fernandez.
