Ellington, 25, was drafted by former general manager Trent Baalke in the fourth round of the 2014 draft, but failed to produce with any consistency in his three years with the team. Ellington missed the entire 2016 season with a torn hamstring, but according to Adam Schefter has fully recovered from that injury. Ellington caught 19 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns in the two seasons he saw playing time with San Francisco. He also returned punts and kickoffs on occasion.
Ellington was probably a long shot to make the team, both because he’s a holdover of the Baalke era, and due to the emergence of Jeremy Kerley last year, the signing of Marquise Goodwin and the drafting of wide receiver Trent Taylor out of Louisiana Tech.
