The San Francisco Giants’ top pitching prospect is inching closer to the Major League level, and after a seven-inning effort in his last outing, there was reason to believe Tyler Beede would receive a shot with the big league club in the coming weeks.
For a brief period on Monday, it even appeared as though Beede might earn an opportunity with the Giants immediately, as the Vanderbilt product was scratched from his start for the AAA Sacramento River Cats.

However, Beede wasn’t scratched because the Giants wanted him to board a flight to San Francisco, but instead because of a strained groin. Henry Schulman of The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Beede strained his groin while warming up on Monday and would miss his start as a result of the injury.

Beede has endured a series of ups and downs with the River Cats this season, allowing at least five runs in five of his starts this season. However, in his last outing, Beede shut down El Paso, the AAA affiliate of the San Diego Padres and lasted seven innings without allowing an earned run.
Even though Beede isn’t on the Giants’ 40-man roster, he may receive a call-up at some point this season as San Francisco will likely look at a few high-profile prospects within the organization later on this season.
Beede joins a growing list of Giants’ prospects who have missed time due to injury this season, including Christian Arroyo, Ryder Jones and Austin Slater. Slater and Arroyo are both expected to be out until at least September, while Jones was recently reinstated from the Giants’ disabled list and optioned to AAA Sacramento.
