Despite a strong start to his first full-length season in the Major Leagues, Giants pitcher Ty Blach has been struggling of late. Blach had given up a combined 15 runs over his last three starts and Friday did little to help buck his recent trend.
After giving up a run in the first inning, the wheels completely came off for Blach in the second, as he gave up six runs on seven hits. The entire Mets’ lineup recorded at least one at-bat against Blach in the second, as the hits just kept on coming. Yoenis Céspedes crushed a three-run shot over the left field wall and Blach even gave up an RBI double to Mets’ starting pitcher, Seth Lugo.
In total, Blach gave up seven runs and 11 hits with no strikeouts over three innings. If it’s any consolation he did give up just one walk.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy said after the game that Blach just simply wasn’t himself.
“Tonight, he was just off, I think that’s fair to say,” Bochy said. “The ball was up, he was missing his spots, but he’s a guy that we have a lot of confidence in to get us deep in the game and he just couldn’t hit his spots. The changeup was up to the pitcher, that’s the ball, the groundball seeing-eye double he got was a changeup up and that really caused a lot of the damage and he couldn’t get out of the inning without the six spot there. With Ty, it’s location and tonight, he was just off a little bit.”
Despite a recent string of rough performances, Bochy remains confident in the young left-hander.
“I think you look at his last start, it was a great start,” Bochy said. “In Colorado against one of the best hitting clubs in baseball. He was right on in that start and gave up two solo shots there in the seventh but he pitched a great game there.”
Blach now has a 4-4 record and a 4.23 ERA through 11 starts.
