Giants place Eduardo Nunez on disabled list

After Giants third baseman Eduardo Nunez sat out the final three games of the team’s four-game set in Atlanta this week, San Francisco reevaluated Nunez on Friday upon returning home to AT&T Park.

Nunez tweaked his hamstring last week in Colorado, and returned to the lineup against on Monday in Atlanta, but the issue continued to linger all week and on Friday, the Giants were forced to place Nunez on the disabled list.

San Francisco placed Nunez on the 10-day disabled list Friday, and called up Conor Gillaspie from AAA Sacramento to take Nunez’s place on the 25-man roster.

Gillaspie suffered a back injury earlier this season, and re-aggravated the injury during a previous rehab assignment with Sacramento. Gillaspie started a new rehab assignment last week, and Nunez’s injury allowed the Giants to bring him back to the big league level.

Nunez is hitting a career-high .299 this season with 17 doubles and 17 stolen bases, and has been one of the few bright spots in a Giants’ lineup that enters the weekend ranked 27th in batting average and runs scored this season.

The Giants third baseman initially injured his hamstring beating out an infield single in San Francisco’s 10-9 loss at Coors Field last Thursday. After sitting out the final three games of the series, Nunez started against Atlanta on Monday, but suffered a setback in his first at-bat. Nunez beat out another infield single, but went to the ground after reaching first base and immediately sought the help of the Giants’ training staff. Nunez stayed in the game on Monday, but did not appear for the remainder of the series.
