After a miraculous ninth inning comeback Sunday, Giants reliever Mark Melancon couldn’t protect the lead, giving up a walk-off homer to Colorado’s Nolan Arenado. It was the Giants’ sixth loss in a row and pulled them down to a 26-45 record.
Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow told Murph & Mac on Monday that the Giants are continuing to lose in surprising ways.
“There’s no answers right now,” Krukow said. “Everybody is looking around going, ‘Hey we’re supposed to be better than this, how are we finding new ways to lose?’ Yesterday’s loss, I gotta be honest with you, I didn’t see it coming. I thought it was going to be a very spirited comeback, which it was. It was a remarkable comeback. Then lo and behold, 15 minutes later it all unfolds in just the most unbelievable way. It really was unbelievable. The [Nolan] Arenado [hit] blew my mind, because here’s a guy who’s 0-for-5 lifetime with three strikeouts against Melancon. It couldn’t have been a more perfect pitch and he barrels it with both elbows bent. That’s the damnedest swing of the bat I think i’ve seen in years, I’m not kidding you. How he got that thing I have no idea, Melancon has no idea, and [Arenado] knocks it out, [gets] the cycle, games over. It was amazing, I don’t have an answer for that. I really don’t.”
With the losses pilling up Krukow said that the team is struggling to find answers.
“They were walking out of there yesterday and you want to talk about the look of daze on everybody’s face because everybody’s been searching,” Krukow said. “They’re grinding. When you don’t win there’s no energy. Right now they don’t have any answers, nobody does. They just have to ride this out and hope that the breaks of the game turn their way because right now they’re not getting any.”
