It’s been a golden decade for Bay Area sports fans, and the Golden State Warriors’ championship-clinching victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night is a title the home fans won’t soon forget.
That’s because the Warriors became the first Bay Area team to clinch their title at home since the Oakland A’s defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Oakland Coliseum in 1974.
Even though the Warriors’ championship is the fifth a professional Bay Area sports team has won this decade, the San Francisco Giants’ three titles and Golden State’s 2014 championship were all clinched on the road.
The Warriors’ 2017 title is the 13th different championship won by a Bay Area sports franchise since the A’s 1974 World Series, but Golden State’s is the first in a stadium full of fans wearing team colors.
The A’s did win their 1989 World Series in the Bay Area, but they claimed their series-clinching victory at Candlestick Park after downing the Giants in a four-game sweep.
