The Giants won an exciting extra inning game over the Brewers on Thursday, but the most amusing moment of the afternoon didn’t involve either of the teams. That came via a pants-less streaker, who joyfully ran towards second base, before being tackled from behind by security.
Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow has been around the game as a player and broadcaster since 1976, and has seen a fair share of streakers in his day. However, one incident during a cold night 40 years ago has stuck with him all these years later. Krukow told the hilarious story to Murph and Mac on Friday morning.
“The best streaker I ever saw was at Candlestick though,” Krukow began. “I was with the Cubs, 1977. Back then they had turf on the field at Candlestick if you remember, and it was cold. I bet there couldn’t have been 1,500 people there, one of the coldest nights I ever remember in my life.
“In the 7th inning, a guy bolts out of the stands right there on the first-base side, and he just starts running the bases. What made this guy unique is he was about 6’ 6” and he had long red hair that went almost down to his butt, and he probably weighed 140 pounds. He hits the first base running, and he’s pretty fast! Around he goes to second base and the roar starts to build, and on ahead he hits third base. By this time we’re on the bench as the visiting team and we’re standing and cheering.
“This guy goes down the third base line, flying, and the whole place is going crazy — this guy was purple he was so cold — and he hits the home plate and he slides head first. Standing ovation. Nobody touched him. The guy got up and trotted off right behind the third base side and that was it.”
