Orlando Calixte says he’s giving ball from his first MLB hit to his mom

SAN FRANCISCO – On a night with not much to cheer for if you’re a Giants fan, recent call-up OF Orlando Calixte was a bright spot on the evening.

Calixte was brought-up to replace outfielder Mac Williamson and was impressive in his debut with the Giants. He went two for five, with an RBI double in the second inning and had his first major-league hit with a single off of the very first pitch he saw from Nationals’ starter Gio Gonzalez.

Besides providing a spark offensively, Calixte also showed an excellent amount of versatility in his ability to play multiple defensive positions. He played left, center, and right field throughout the game, as Giants manager Bruce Bochy was able to move Calixte all over the outfield depending on the game-situation. This could give the Giants a lot of flexibility going forward if Calixte is able to play multiple positions at a high level. Calixte also has experience playing shortstop and third-base.

He is the first Giants’ player to play all three outfield positions in a game since Randy Winn on May 10, 2009.

The Giants have struggled all season to find an everyday option in left-field and if Calixte continues to play well, there’s a strong possibility that he could fill that role, if needed.
