Crawford on Opening Day loss: There’s nothing that needs to be said

Want to know how the Giants are feeling after starting the season 0-1? There were no workouts scheduled for a complete day off following Sunday’s 6-5 loss to the Diamondbacks. Brandon Crawford even decided to go relax at his house in Arizona for the day.

San Francisco’s star shortstop took 10 minutes to speak with Gary Radnich and Kevin Frandsen Monday to discuss Opening Day, and in particular Mark Melancon. The high-priced closer blew his first save opportunity in a new uniform, causing some angst among a fan base coming off a tortured season. Including the postseason, the Giants blew 32 saves a year ago.

“He was fine,” Crawford said about Melancon in the locker room afterwards. “He talked to the media, was obviously disappointed, but he wasn’t pouting in his locker or anything like that. He’s an experienced closer. It’s not his first time blowing a save, and as much as I’m sure he wanted to get that first one, he’ll be just as hungry his next opportunity.

“He knows. He’s been in that role for a long time. That’s not his first blown save he’s ever had. He knows, he’s disappointed probably more so than anybody. There’s nothing that needs to be said. I mean a couple of guys might’ve gave him a pat on the back or something like that, but he knows. He’s fine. He’s a big boy, he’s been in that role for a long time, like I said. He’ll be alright.”

After the customary off day following the season opener, the Giants are back on KNBR Tuesday at 6:40.
