After informing him he would not make the team, the San Francisco Giants granted the release of veteran reliever David Hernandez, who was in camp on a minor-league contract.

The right-handed Hernandez, 31, pitched in 70 games for the Phillies last season, posting a 3.84 ERA. Hernandez received a camp invite to compete with young arms Derek Law, George Kotos and Hunter Strickland, but did not perform well enough to be considered for a roster spot. He was also outplayed by fellow invitee Neil Ramirez. Hernandez pitched in six exhibition games and had a 4.76 ERA while allowing seven hits and five walks in 5 2/3 innings.
Hernandez was due to earn a $100,000 retention bonus had the Giants kept him on the roster past next Tuesday. It is assumed Hernandez believes he can make a major league roster, as he is electing not to join the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento.
