Awaiting reinstatement into the NFL, Raiders defensive end Aldon Smith was detained by authorities in San Francisco Thursday morning as first reported by KTVU News.

Police said that Smith was detained after a three-passenger vehicle crashed into a San Francisco police cruiser on the China Basin side of the city’s Public Safety Building around 8:30 a.m.

Smith was detained for public intoxication and expected to be released when he is sober and no charges will be filed, police said.

Smith application for reinstatement back into the league was denied on December 30 by Roger Goodell, after serving a one year suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Despite being a Hall of Fame level talent, Smith frequent off the field transgressions have kept him off the field for the majority of his career. Smith hasn’t played a full season since 2012 when he was voted as a first-team All-Pro. Smith was released by the 49ers in August of 2015 after a string of incidents including three DUIs.

After joining the Raiders, Smith was ultimately suspended for one year without pay on November 17, 2015 that stemmed from his latest DUI incident. With his NFL future still up in the air, it is unclear how this latest incident will affect him going forward.

The Raiders re-signed Smith to a two-year contract in April after notching 3.5 sacks in nine games for Oakland in 2015.
