Kirk Cousins requests a trade, rebuffed by Dan Snyder [report]

Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins has requested to be traded from the Washington Redskins but has been told not to get his hopes up by owner Dan Snyder, according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN.

This report comes just hours after our KNBR.com Sr. Writer Kevin Jones reported that a grudge held by Snyder toward 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is one of the obstacles standing in the way of a trade that would send Cousins to San Francisco. It is widely believed that Cousins’ preferred destination would be to be reunited with Shanahan, who was his offensive coordinator during the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

Via Kevin Jones:

Sources tell KNBR.com that Snyder is holding onto bad blood he and current 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan crafted years ago. Snyder fired Shanahan and his father Mike after a 3-13 campaign in 2013 that played out in the public eye through media leaks. Snyder does not want to help Shanahan succeed at the NFL level.

This factor, coupled with draft pick compensation, GM Scot McCloughan’s absence and Cousins’ refusal to sign his franchise tag offer are all reasons why a deal has not been struck.

The Redskins recently applied the franchise tag to Cousins for 2017, but have not been able to work out what would likely be a lucrative long term deal. Cousins did not so much demand a trade as ask Snyder to explore one, according to Jason La Canfora.
