Keim: 49ers have all the leverage in potential Cousins trade

Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins has been the subject of many trade rumors this offseason, especially after signing his second consecutive franchise tag with the team, the first QB in NFL history to be tagged in consecutive years.

ESPN.com’s Redskins Reporter John Keim joined KNBR 1050’s The Audible Wednesday morning to discuss all things Kirk Cousins and the possibility he could be wearing a 49ers uniform next season. Keim was asked how a potential trade between Washington and San Francisco involving Cousins would work out this offseason. Cousins played for Kyle Shanahan in Washington in 2012 and 2013 when Shanahan was the team’s offensive coordinator.

“The scenario is, however the 49ers want it to play out. They don’t need to force any sort of trade. If the 49ers are willing to wait, they can get him next year,” Keim said. “Cousins will be there next offseason, they know they don’t have to acquiesce to the Redskins’ demands right now. If the Redskins lower their demands, then I could see it happening this offseason.”

When it comes to the Redskins’ asking price, Keim explained: “They would want to win any deal, versus just having to trade him because you’re not gonna keep him next year.” The Redskins of course made a blockbuster trade before the 2012 NFL Draft, sending three first-round picks and a second-round pick to the then St. Louis Rams for the number 2 overall pick, using it to select Robert Griffin III, who is now with the Cleveland Browns.

There have also been many reports that former Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon will be signing with the 49ers. On the possibility of Cousins and Garcon reuniting in San Francisco, Keim said: “I think it would definitely entice him because he likes Pierre Garcon and has a good rapport with him. I don’t think they need a Garcon to entice him, what’s enticing to him is Kyle Shanahan and that offense, it’s as much the style of the offense but it’s also Shanahan himself.”
