Patriots not expected to trade Jimmy Garoppolo [report]

INDIANAPOLIS — One day after the Redskins placed the exclusive franchise tag on Kirk Cousins, and told PFT they are seeking a Robert Griffin III type of trade package in return for their quarterback, another top quarterback is also reportedly off the market.

At this point, it’s kind of impossible to tell if this is a leverage move from New England or a serious claim. There will be a lot of jostling these next couple of days with every team together in Indianapolis.

On one hand, the Patriots may truly believe Garoppolo is a certified replacement for Tom Brady. He still has a year left on his rookie contract. What’s the rush to get rid of a promising quarterback?

On the other hand, the Patriots have always traded away assets like Halloween candy. Star defensive players Chandler Jones and Jamie Collins were both dealt away and the team still ended up winning the Super Bowl. Bill Belichick has never been one to shy away from a deal.

My best guess: Both Garoppolo and Cousins remain with their teams in 2017, and we repeat this circus again in 2018. We’ll be sure to ask Kyle Shanahan about this on Wednesday, when he meets with reporters at 2:30 eastern.
