The Giants announced the signing of catcher Nick Hundley, Tuesday morning, as reported by CSN’s Alex Pavlovic.
Hundley’s Major League deal is for one year, worth $2 million and will most likely mean he’s now the lead candidate to back up All-Star catcher Buster Posey, taking over for 2016’s backup catcher Trevor Brown.
Brown hit .237 with five home runs and 19 RBI last season.
Hundley, meanwhile, is a 33-year-old, .250 batter entering his 10th season in the majors. He spent most of those years with the Padres, while spending the last two seasons in Colorado as the Rockies’ backup catcher, cranking out 10 home runs each of the last two seasons.
Brown, meanwhile, will head back to Sacramento to get more experience at the Triple-A level. The Giants most likely wanted to keep their 25-year old catcher in the minors for the majority of last season, but were handcuffed by a lack of depth at the position in the majors.
Hundley is the Giants’ second free-agent signing this season, joining closer Mark Melancon and his 4yr/$64 million deal.
