With the 49ers (1-13) quickly heading toward their worst season in franchise history, it’s clear that changes within the organization are on the horizon.

Former 49ers quarterback and current ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer joined Fitz and Brooks on Tuesday afternoon to share his thoughts on who San Francisco should target as their next head coach.

“I think (Mike) Shanahan is interesting,” Dilfer said. “I was a big proponent of Shanahan being the coach here when Jim (Harbaugh) left. I think he’s an interesting hire. He’s obviously been around everything (and) knows everything about football,”

Shanahan was rumored to be a finalist before Chip Kelly got the job last off-season, and rumors about him coming back to the 49ers have surfaced this season as well. Dilfer also mentioned fellow ESPN colleague Jon Gruden, who despite being out of the game since 2008, is believed to be interested in a head coaching role, assuming he also gets to pick the players.

“Gruden, it’s just my opinion we didn’t talk about this Sunday night, I do think he is interested to be that head coach/ personnel guy,” Dilfer said. “Kind’ve shop for the groceries as well as cook ’em up. So that’s kind’ve my take on this thing.”

Gruden is reportedly also a focal point of the Los Angels Rams head coaching search.
