The Giants might not be in the market to sign any more big name players, but that doesn’t mean Bobby Evans isn’t trying to create as much competition as possible for roster spots.
San Francisco signed former Dodgers catcher Tim Federowicz to a minor-league deal on Wednesday, likely to compete with incumbent Trevor Brown to be the team’s backup catcher in 2017.

Federowicz confirmed the report on Thursday, saying he is excited about the new opportunity.
Very excited about my new opportunity with the @SFGiants. Spring training can’t come soon enough.

Drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 2008, Federowicz, 29, hasn’t managed to earn consistent playing time in any of his five major league seasons. His 56 games with the Dodgers in 2013 is the most he’s played in a single-season throughout his career.
Federowicz spent four seasons with Los Angeles between 2011-14 and earned a World Series ring last season as a member of the Chicago Cubs. In 304 major league plate appearances, Federowicz has hit .194/.243/.295, but has fared much better in Triple-A with career numbers of .305/.375/.513 in 1,340 plate appearances. Those numbers compare favorably to Brown’s .273/.332/.346 production at the Triple-A level.
