Torrey Smith suffered the first serious concussion of his career in the 49ers 23-17 loss to the New York Jets on Sunday, lying face down for minutes before being carted off the field.
Smith joined the Murph and Mac show on Wednesday morning and said he’s improving but still experiencing symptoms, admitting that he was knocked out cold after landing on his head area attempting to make a leaping catch.
“You just have to wait until the symptoms go down,” Smith said. “I still have symptoms now. I don’t know how long that will be, a week or two weeks, it’s my first time ever having one like this. I was knocked out. It was pretty bad … things are getting better which is a positive sign.”
Smith sustained a minor concussion with the Baltimore Ravens in 2012, but never like this one, in which he also experienced memory loss.
“Definitely some memory loss in there,” Smith said. “… It doesn’t scare me from wanting to get back out there.”
The veteran receiver is not sure if he’ll be ready to play this Sunday when the 49ers head to Atlanta to play the Falcons, or if he’ll be available again this season, but said the trainers are not in any hurry to rush him back.
“You really have no clue.”
Smith is the 49ers fifth-leading receiver in 2016, with 20 catches for 276 yards and three touchdowns.
