If Trent Baalke is indeed out as 49ers general manager at the end of the season as reports have indicated, he may not be out of a job for long.
Baalke is likely to land with the Denver Broncos if Jed York elects to fire Baalke at the end of the season, multiple league sources have told 49ers beat writer Matt Maiocco of CSN BayArea.
Both Maiocco and Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports have reported that Baalke is likely done as 49ers GM. La Canfora also told KNBR that York’s power with regards to football operations could be stripped away.
La Canfora said that 49ers ownership is “open to significant changes just one year into its latest coaching/management regime,” in his report on Sunday, saying that both Baalke and Kelly are in danger of losing their jobs. La Canfora added that it would be a “surprise” of Baalke was back as the 49ers GM in 2017.
Baalke is in his sixth year as the 49ers general manager, with the team not posting a winning record since 2013, and in danger of finishing with the first one-win season in franchise history.
Tim Ryan asked Baalke about the rumors of his ouster on KNBR before Sunday’s loss to the Jets.
“I don’t worry about it. It is what it is,” Baalke said. “I’m going to keep putting my head down and going to work. It’s just something you can’t control. You try and control the things that you can control.”
Baalke is known to have a relationship with current Broncos general manager John Elway, with the two spending time together during joint practices each of the past two summers.
