Redwood City native and New England wide receiver Julian Edelman makes his return to the Bay Area on Sunday, when the Patriots head to Levi’s Stadium for a clash with the Niners. Edelman told ESPN’s Mike Reiss that he’s excited to return home, but admitted that he’d prefer is the 49ers were still playing at the stadium he used to attend as a kid.

“It’s going to be pretty exciting,” Edelman said Wednesday before practice. “The new place is no Candlestick [Park], but it will be pretty fun to go back and get to play in front of some friends and family. Going to Santa Clara, going to Great America my whole life, it will be cool.”

The 49ers played at the now demolished Candlestick from 1971-2013, winning five Super Bowl titles during their tenure. The stadium was considered one of the most antiquated facilities in the league when the 49ers left for Santa Clara’s Levi’s Stadium in 2014, something many 49er fans remain disgruntled over.

At least Edelman’s favorite amusement park is still standing.
