A plan for rebuilding the 49ers

KNBR.com’s Kevin Jones has been very vocal about his desire to help the 49ers return to prominence.

On his podcast Wednesday, Jones laid out a plan CEO Jed York can execute to put the 49ers back on a fast track to winning.

  1. Fire GM Trent Baalke before the end of the season so you make it clear to your fan base who is at fault for possibly the worst season in franchise history.
  2. Keep head coach Chip Kelly and hold a press conference reaffirming your commitment to him. The fans desperately want more transparency from the organization.
  3. Relieve defensive coordinator Jim O’Neil of his duties.
  4. Hire a new GM for a brand new perspective. New England’s Nick Caserio should be the top target.
  5. Gut the roster — release at least 20 players, if not 30.
  6. Make wide receiver Alshon Jeffery the top priority in free agency
  7. Sign cost-effective veterans in free agency. You can’t build a proper culture with just young players on your 53-man roster.
  8. Draft Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson — and not because of his athleticism, but instead his arm talent and accuracy. Adding a young quarterback is much more imperative than a defensive lineman like Texas A&M’s Myles Garrett.
  9. Draft another receiver in the second or third round. All of a sudden, your offense is Watson, Jeffrey, rookie receiver, Torrey Smith, Carlos Hyde and an above average offensive line. Kelly can work with that.
