The San Francisco Giants have added former All-Star 3B Phil Nevin to their coaching staff. Nevin will presumably fill one of the spots vacated by Roberto Kelly and Bill Hayes, both of whom lost their jobs as the Giants’ two base coaches this past offseason.

Nevin has been the manager of the Diamondback’s Triple-A team, the Reno Aces, since 2014. Before that, the former 3B managed both the Triple-A and Double-A affiliates for the Detroit Tigers.

Nevin reportedly applied to be the new manager for the Diamondbacks when the team cleaned house in early October, firing then-manager Chip Hale.  When the team went with Torey Louvollo, Nevin chose to leave the organization and join the Giants.

Drafted by the Houston Astros in the 1st round of the 1992 draft, Nevin spent 12 years in the majors with the seven different teams. His best years were with the San Diego padres, where he played under then-manager Bruce Bochy.
