Rumors have been swirling over the past few weeks that the 49ers are looking to trade deep-threat Torrey Smith, with reports that the Philadelphia Eagles are interested surfacing last weekend as Tuesday’s deadline approaches.
Something seems fishy to 49ers beat reporter Matt Barrows, however, who told the Murph and Mac Show on Monday that the rumors sound to him like a plant from Smiths agent, and that the same may be true regarding the trade rumors surrounding left tackle Joe Staley.
“My little radar inside my head starts to move around whenever several national reporters at the very same time report that Torrey Smith is being shopped around,” Barrows said. “That sounded to me like it was coming from Torrey Smith’s agent, which is a whole another bag of worms and implies that Torrey Smith doesn’t want to be here and you would have to conclude the same thing about Joe Staley if that’s how you interpret all this.”
What’s more Barrows sees little incentive for the 49ers to trade two talented players on a roster with few of them, unless San Francisco was receiving something lucrative in return.
“The 49ers are a team that’s missing talent and unless you’re getting a slew of talent for these guys, that you have on the trade block I don’t see how it makes sense at all.”
