With the 49ers mired in a listless 1-6 start to the season, general manager Trent Baalke’s approval rating is at an all-time low.
We learned on Wednesday via Niners Nation, however, that Baalke has at least one strong supporter still in his corner…the band Smash Mouth.
Yes, that Smash Mouth, who are apparently still around and very passionate about their local football team.
The group’s official Twitter account came to the defense of the downtrodden general manager in a series of posts, sparked by KNBR’s Ray Woodson responding to an innocuous tweet.
I’d say they are where the Raiders were in 2013. Get a GM with a good plan and hit on a QB in draft, maybe three or four years. https://t.co/YuczxzFBeC

Smash Mouth wasn’t having any of it, arguing that despite the team’s recent results, Baalke is still an all-star in their eyes, and one of the best general managers in the league.
@RayWoodson680 Baalke is one of the best GM’s in the league point blank. The usage and discipline of players he’s drafted has not worked out

The band then cited the fact that the Baalke built a great Niners team that was walking on the sun just a few years ago when they made it to the Super Bowl in 2012.
@mm3813 @RayWoodson680 He built a team that made it to Super Bowl XLVII in 2012. How many current GM’s have?

Smash Mouth then revealed they have a relationship with Baalke, and that someone as smart as him is surely not to blame for the team’s struggles.
@mm3813 @RayWoodson680 You ever speak with him? He’s much too smart to let anything get in the way. He doesn’t own the team.

Another shot at York follwed, with Smash Mouth arguing the organization should’ve never released Aldon Smith.
@LCSwebzone @RayWoodson680 Aldon Smith is a NFL stud point blank! That was Yorks fault and decision to hack him.

The San Jose based group finished off the exchange in cryptic fashion, implying they have some behind the scenes knowledge on the exit of Jim Harbaugh.
@mm3813 @RayWoodson680 Waaay more went on regarding the Harb departure.

Thank you Smash Mouth for giving us a story related to the Niners that actually makes us smile.
