Dennis Brown: They are playing defense with special teams guys

Former 49er defensive end Dennis Brown joined the Murph and Mac show to explain what in the world is going on with the 49ers’ run defense.

Yesterday’s 312 rushing yards allowed to Buffalo comes on the heels of allowing a 100-yard rusher in five straight games. LeSean McCoy hit that mark before halftime.

Brown is blaming the team’s depth first and foremost.

“You have to understand, they are playing with backups. I mean, Nick (Bellore) is a special teams guy. He’s in there starting at linebacker. (Michael) Wilhoite has started a lot of games, but he’s also a backup guy,” said Brown. “Their inside linebacker position, you talk about depleted.

“You are talking about guys who made the team on special teams, when you talk about Nick. He’s a guy who runs down on kickoffs and punts and things like that. It’s tough to step in there and play that linebacker position. You’ve got to be a dog on the hunt. You’ve got to play everything downhill. You can’t wait for anything to come to you. You’ve got to go get it. That’s what this defense is missing, that attack.”
