It was a reoccurring issue of the 2016 season of the San Francisco Giants: Could the bullpen be trusted? The answer was a resounding no, especially during the 9th inning collapse in a Game 4 NLDS loss against the Cubs.
Bay Area News Group Giants beat writer Andy Baggarly says there’s a name that makes a lot of sense for the Giants: Nationals free agent closer Mark Melancon.
“The last line I wrote in a piece the other day was you think the Cubs are the biggest winner of Game 5? No. Mark Melancon’s agent might’ve been,” Baggarly said. “I think Mark Melancon will be their top target.”
Other names Baggarly mentioned include Los Angeles’ Kenley Jansen, Chicago’s Aroldis Chapman and Kansas City’s Wade Davis. Melancon’s 2016 numbers were as follows: 47 saves, 4 blown saves, 71.1 innings pitched, 65 strikeouts, 12 walks, 1.64 ERA. Melancon is 31 years old and also posted 51 saves in 2015 for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Many in the Giants fan base will undoubtedly want a big free agent splash in the outfield. The Giants have stated that Mac Williamson and Jarett Parker are both on the radar to man left field in 2017. Baggarly understands why.
“I really like Williamson, because he gives you on-base skills in addition to power,” Baggarly said.
