Anthony Davis walked away from the 49ers on Monday, his second abrupt retirement in as many years.
According to Pro Football Talk, Davis owes the franchise money.
Davis will have to repay the 49ers $1.235 million in 2016 and an additional $1.5 million next season. This comes after he paid the 49ers $1.667 million for last year’s retirement. So in total, Davis has paid the 49ers just over $4 million not to play football. The money owed is part of Davis’ signing bonus.
A happy camper during the preseason, Davis voluntarily switched his position to right guard to help the team. But when he found out Andrew Tiller would be starting in his spot, reports of Davis’ retirement started leaking out. Prior to Week 1, Chip Kelly called it a miscommunication and Davis agreed in the locker room with the coach. A week later, Davis suffered a concussion in practice. A week after the head injury, Davis retired again.
The No. 11 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, Davis started four straight seasons at right tackle. The 49ers traded up to obtain Davis and signed him to a $37.5 million contract.
PFT’s Mike Florio argues Davis’ actions are honorable. He could’ve faked injuries to collect more money. Davis’ teammate Joe Staley offered this reaction to his teammates second retirement.
