SANTA CLARA — Quarterback Colin Kaepernick met with beat writers in an informal setting Tuesday in the 49ers locker room.
Kaepernick announced he’s donating $100,000 over the next 10 months and creating a website where people can track where the money is going. Kaepernick has yet to determine which organizations he will donate to, but noted they will be scattered throughout the country.
Kaepernick continued to speak out on social injustice on Tuesday, citing the recent Tulsa police shooting of Terence Crutcher the exact reason he began protesting in the first place.
“There’s a lot of racism disguised as patriotism in this country,” Kaepernick said. “And people don’t like to address that. And they don’t like to address what the root of this protest is.”
Kaepernick commended Patriots defensive lineman Chris Long for speaking out.
“I respect my peers, I respect Colin,” Long said via CSN New England earlier last week. “Colin really put his reputation on the line, and he’s taking a beating. He’s also had support. I don’t think he did it for publicity. I’m just going to listen to my peers, because I respect those guys, and I can’t put myself in their shoes.”
Kaepernick said he’s received death threats since the protest began in August, from channels other than social media, too. But he’s proud of where the protest has come.
“You’re not just seeing grown men and adults talking about it,” Kaepernick said. “You’re having kids talk about it. They are the ones living with it and dealing with it.”
