In anticipation of starting Wednesday’s game against the Red Sox, Matt Cain was activated off the 15-day disabled list. The Giants designated infielder Ruben Tejada for assignment to clear a roster spot for the right-hander.
Tejada lasted only 13 games with the Giants. He collected five hits across 32 at-bats, including three doubles. He’s already cleared waivers twice this season with the Mets and Cardinals, and could very likely do so a third time. Tejada would then have the option to accept a minor league assignment with the Giants or declare himself a free agent. The roster move stacks the Giants with 13 pitchers and 12 position players. With the way the starting rotation has struggled out of the All-Star break, the Giants elected to bolster their pitching depth at the expense of their infield.
Cain is slated to make only his second start since May 27, when he initially strained his right hamstring in Colorado. He endured one stint on the disabled list before re-aggravating his hamstring injury in a start on June 13 against the Brewers.
