Marvin Williams

Age: 30

Height: 6-foot-9

Career stats: 28.8 mpg; 10.5 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.3 apg, 0.8 spg, 0.5 bpg; 44.6/35.4/80.2 shooting splits

2015-16 stats: 81 games, 28.9 mpg; 11.7 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 1.4 apg, 0.7 spg, 1.0 bpg; 45.2/30.2/83.3 shooting splits

Strengths:

  • Skill set plays wall in the small ball era
  • Knockdown three-point shooter
  • Excellent post-up player

Weaknesses:

  • Has lost a step or two over the years
  • Doesn’t offer much upside compared to similar options

Why the Warriors make sense:

According to SB Nation, using true shooting percentage and other attempt metrics, Williams was the second best shooter in the NBA last season behind Steph Curry. He’s a savvy veteran, who can play defense and rebound. He also scored a league best 1.16 points per every post-up he had last season. He’s not flashy at all, but Williams has turned his career around from being a bust from the 2006 NBA Draft, to becoming a burgeoning role player who fits as a power forward in the small ball era.

Why the Warriors don’t make sense:

Williams is not a young, athletic slasher, which Golden State’s roster is severely lacking. As bad as Harrison Barnes was in the NBA Finals, he played well when the Warriors were running in transition. It’s hard to tell how much Williams would slow down the Dubs, but his speed — or lack there of — will be a talking point if GM Bob Myers does consider him.
