According to Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic, the Giants included Alyssa Nakken in their formal interview process.
Nakken, per The Athletic, is one of a handful of in-house candidates the Giants are considering to fill their manager vacancy.
The San Francisco Chronicle initially reported that third base coach Mark Hallberg interviewed for the job. Fansided’s Robert Murray revealed that bench coach Kai Correa also got an interview. Now Nakken is also in the fold.
Nakken is the first full-time female coach in MLB history. She also became the first woman to coach on the field when she subbed in as first-base coach during a 2022 game.
That makes the news history: Nakken is now known to be the first woman truly considered for a manager job.
The 33-year-old has coached for the Giants as an assistant since 2020. Her responsibilities have been wide-ranging and she has earned consistent praise from players and fellow coaches.
Nakken and her husband are expecting their first child this February.
“We’re all really happy for Alyssa,” Gabe Kapler said on Aug. 14. “She’s doing great, and we’re excited to support her through this on every level.”
Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said that the team planned on interviewing “one or two” internal candidates. They intend to fill the position — which opened when San Francisco dismissed Kapler with three games left in the season — before the free agency period opens.
