Farhan Zaidi has shown he is willing to promote prospects aggressively this season if he believes the situation calls for it, and that will continue on Wednesday.

The Giants are calling up top prospect Marco Luciano for Wednesday’s game vs. the Oakland Athletics. The call-up would come after another quiet offensive performance in which San Francisco scored two runs in Tuesday’s victory over the A’s. The Giants have scored 11 total runs in the last seven games.

Luciano, a shortstop, would also help with significant depth issues in the middle infield that have forced struggling hitters Casey Schmitt and Brett Wisely into everyday roles.

Luciano, ranked by some as the club’s top prospect and by MLB as SF’s second-best prospect behind Kyle Harrison, made his Triple-A debut earlier this month and has only played six games in Sacramento. In those games he’s played well going 7 for 24 with two homers, two doubles and three walks. In both Double-A and Triple-A combined Luciano has posted of slash line of .234/.341.460 with 12 homes runs in 61 games this season.

Patrick Bailey had a similar trajectory, playing in just 14 games apiece at Double-A and Triple-A before his call-up.

Luciano will join Bailey, Schmitt and Matos as top prospects that have been called up by the Giants in 2023.

David Villar was sent back to Sacramento in a corresponding move.
