Alex Cobb is joining closer Camilo Doval in Seattle to represent the Giants at the All-Star game.
Cobb, 35, was named to the National League All-Star team as a replacement. It’s his first All-Star selection in his 12-year career.
Cobb has a 2.91 ERA in 16 starts for the Giants. He’s pitching as well at 35 as he ever has, the result of a combination of drive to return to his best self after his 2015 Tommy John surgery and his willingness to seek resources that would help his performance.
Cobb will replace Atlanta’s Bryce Elder on the NL team. He and Doval will be SF’s lone representatives.
As one of two reliable starters in the Giants’ rotation, Cobb has been a steadying presence. He ranks 10th in MLB in ERA, sixth in home runs allowed per nine innings, and 10th in adjusted ERA. He holds a 6-2 record, the best ark on the Giants’ staff.
On April 24, Cobb tossed his first complete game shutout since 2012. Most recently, in his last start before the break, he spun six scoreless innings in a win against Seattle despite not having his best stuff.
Cobb would have been an All-Star with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2013, but he got drilled by a comeback line drive that sidelined him for two months. He joins Brandon Crawford, Joc Pederson, Michael Conforto, Ross Stripling, Taylor Rogers, Mitch Haniger and Alex Wood as active Giants who have been All-Stars in their careers.
