One of the unique highlights of All-Star Weekend is Futures Game.
It’s a moment for MLB to show off some of its brightest up-and-coming stars before they set foot in the big leagues.
Of the 50 players invited to the game, the Giants had two, both left-handed pitchers: Kyle Harrison and Carson Whisenhunt.
Both figure to be in the majors by next season, if not this one.
Harrison is MLB.com’s 14th overall prospect and the top lefty in the minor leagues.
Through 49 2/3 innings for the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats, Harrison has posted a 4.53 ERA with 82 strikeouts. His 39 walks are of concern, and part of the reason he has not yet been called up.
He played in the Futures Game last year, getting two outs, striking out two but allowing two home runs and four runs.
Whisenhunt, meanwhile, has been stellar. He was drafted by the Giants in the second round in 2022 out of East Carolina and is the team’s fourth-ranked prospect.
Since moving to Double-A Richmond, he’s struggled, posting a 5.91 ERA over his first 10 2/3 innings, but had a 1.42 ERA in High-A ball in Eugene before that.
The Giants are hoping both can make their way into the rotation as solid starters for years to come, with the Futures game a potential opportunity to flash that upside.
