According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants are expected to meet the Cardinals in one of MLB’s signature events: the Field of Dreams game.
There’s a new wrinkle to the game next year, per Slusser. The signature event, realized from the Kevin Costner movie “Field of Dreams,” won’t be played in the cornfields like the 1989 flick. Instead, the game is expected to be played at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama — the oldest professional ballpark in America.
It will be the second consecutive year of MLB putting the Giants on a grand stage, since this year they played the Padres in Mexico City.
Final details of the event have yet to be made official.
Rickwood Field, built in 1910, has a unique place in San Francisco Giants history. Willie Mays grew up nearby and began his professional career playing on the diamond for the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro League. The ballpark is the only remaining stadium that Mays called home still standing.
In past Field of Dreams games, the teams have worn throwback uniforms. The Giants playing in the same-styled jerseys Mays wore in 1948 as a 17-year-old would make for a moving image.
“I would love that, that would be really cool,” Giants first baseman LaMonte Wade Jr. told Slusser. “It’ll definitely give you the full effect of the game. I hope it is us who wears the jerseys, for sure. That would be something to remember forever.”
The legendary Rickwood Field has been featured in biopics of Jackie Robinson and Ty Cobb, and in the 2022 HBO documentary about Mays.
The Giants and Cardinals are currently playing a series in Busch Stadium.
