Luis Matos headed to St. Louis for Wednesday’s Giants game

Duane Kuiper said on Tuesday morning that Luis Matos shouldn’t get the call-up until the Giants have a need due to injury. On Tuesday evening, the Giants had a need due to injury.

The brutal news is that Mitch Haniger is likely to be out for a long time with a fractured forearm via hit-by-pitch. The silver lining is that it is imminent that Matos makes his debut with the big league club.

In his postgame scrum, manager Gabe Kapler confirmed that both Matos and David Villar — who is getting the call thanks to J.D. Davis’ sprained ankle — are headed to St. Louis for Wednesday’s matinee. Kapler said at least one player would be active, and possibly both.

The call comes after Matos hit yet another home run on Tuesday, astoundingly his sixth big fly in the last seven games. Shortly after, Matos and Villar were taken out of the game, and given orders to head to St. Louis.

Matos has been hitting the cover off the ball ever since his call-up to Triple-A Sacramento. In 24 games, he’s slashing .398/.435/.685 with seven home runs.
