Kyrie Irving has evidently been listening to a lot of Player this offseason:
According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Irving is trying to woo LeBron James back into his arms.
To be fair, the report just says that Irving wants to see if he “would like to come to Dallas.”
Who knows? Maybe Irving just wants to hang out; drop into a speakeasy in Deep Ellum, grab some lavish cocktails, maybe discuss certain theories about whether or not our world is real, and/or flat. It’s impossible to say, really.
It’s been six years since Irving and James played together in Cleveland back in 2017, when the Cavaliers came back from 3-1 down to win the series.
The following year, Irving forced his way to Boston for the start of his team-bouncing chaos tour. That year, the Warriors swept the Cavaliers as more than -1000 favorites in the Finals. The Cavaliers nearly snagged Game 1 if not for an iconic disasterclass in situational unawareness from J.R. Smith that left James — who played perhaps the greatest playoff game ever — speechless.
Since then, Irving has won just two playoff series: one in 2019 with Boston, and one in 2021 with Brooklyn.
James, 38, following a sweep at the hands of the Nuggets, has reportedly been considering retirement, but has two years and $97.13 million (one normal contract year and one player option) left on his contract, making him a potential free agent in one year.
