Bob Myers has made his decision.
Before Myers’ press conference scheduled for 1 p.m. on Tuesday, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski published a story in which the Warriors’ decorated president and general manager announced he will step down.
“It’s time,” Myers told Woj.
Myers has been with the Warriors’ front office since 2011 and was promoted to GM in 2012. During his tenure, Golden State reached the NBA Finals six times, winning four of them. Other than Stephen Curry, Myers had a hand in drafting or acquiring every major piece of Golden State’s dynasty.
Myers is a unique executive that has strong relationships with every member of the organization, including the players. Myers is known to be extremely close with, Curry, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson and Andre Iguodala. He was very close with Kevin Durant during his three-year tenure.
According to Woj’s piece, Myers could return to a front office at some point and would “become the one of the most pursued executives in modern North American professional sports history.”
Myers leaves with the Warriors at a crossroads, facing a $500 million payroll unless tough decisions are made this offseason. VPs of basketball operations Mike Dunleavy Jr. and Kirk Lacob are expected to be promoted by owner Joe Lacob with Myers out of the picture. Dunleavy Jr. is seen as the favorite to take over as GM.
