The Giants sent left-handed pitcher Sam Long across the Bay to Oakland in exchange for cash considerations, the team announced Sunday.

Long, 27, had been designated for assignment earlier in the week. The southpaw made his Major League debut with the Giants in 2021 and pitched in 40 games for San Francisco.

Long has a career 4.55 ERA and has both starting and bullpen experience.

The Giants DFA’d Long when the bought minor league outfielder Cal Stevenson, who was also DFA’d, from the A’s. That makes the transactions essentially a one-for-one swap.

The Giants and Athletics haven’t officially made a trade since 1990, when the clubs swapped Darren Lewis and a player to be named later for Ernest Riles.

For Long, a Fair Oaks native, the Athletics represent a chance to remain in Northern California. The A’s should also have more opportunities for Long than the Giants do, given their status in the standings.

Oakland is 4-18 with a -103 run differential, by far the worst in MLB.
