With the NFL draft nearly two weeks away, the 49ers are in the midst of their evaluation process. They’re not ruling out quarterbacks.
According to NBC affiliate Click2Houston.com, San Francisco held a private workout with fifth-year UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson.
The 6-foot-1-inch, 203-pound senior enters the draft process coming off a stellar final season in which he passed for 27 touchdowns and 3,169 yards (69.6 percent completion) while throwing 10 interceptions. He ran for another 12 touchdowns and 648 yards, averaging 5.5 yards per carry.
While he’s fairly small and didn’t test well in his shuttle or 3-cone drills, his broad jump (10 feet, one inch, 94.2 percentile) and 40-yard dash (4.56 seconds, 97.4 percentile) times were elite.
The 49ers could look to add a quarterback in the later rounds of the draft, or as an undrafted free agent.
NBC Sports’ Matt Maiocco discussed how the 49ers, who have a league-high 11 picks in this year’s draft, could opt to use their picks in a couple of weeks. Listen to the full interview below:
If the 49ers did opt to select Thompson-Robinson or another quarterback, it would likely be in the seventh round, where they have four selections. Unlike last year, when they drafted Brock Purdy, they don’t have the final pick, for this year’s Mr. Irrelevant.
