Draymond Green’s future is up in the air. The former Defensive Player of the Year has a team option for next season, but it’s a year where the Warriors will probably have to cut bait with a significant player due to an elevated tax bill.
During the preseason, it seemed a certainty that Green would be gone after he cold cocked Jordan Poole in an incident caught on video. But Green has been excellent this year — better than Poole as a matter of fact — and it would seem that another deep playoff run could entice the Warriors to extend his contract.
That’s something that Green would be more than happy with.
“I’ve been here 11 years,” Draymond said on the “#thisleague UNCUT” podcast. “I’ve done everything that you can possibly do here. Why would I want to go somewhere else and try to do it again, to prove to the people who say that Draymond can only play on that team, he can’t play anywhere else.
“Should I try to go prove those people wrong? I’ve been proving those people wrong, those same people said I would never make it in the NBA. I would love to finish my career here. That’s been my goal since maybe signing this current contract that I’m on.”
Green went on to say that he’s not interested in playing that much longer. On the verge of finishing his 11th season, says he wants to hang it up after four more years.
“And I also don’t want to play 20 years in the NBA,” Green said. “I want to play 15 years in the NBA. I think it’s very realistic that in four more years, I’ll be contributing at a high level, I’ll still be able to give to a team and live up to the contracts I’ll be on. So I do want to be here. As far as the probability goes, I can’t necessarily give you that, because it’s not up to me. If it was totally up to me I can 100 percent tell you I’ll finish my career here.”
