Buster Posey doesn’t miss sitting behind the dish every day.
The seven-time All-Star is still around the game in an ownership capacity with the Giants, but after 12 seasons in the majors, he says he’s happy to watch.
In an interview on “Foul Territory” with Scott Braun and former players Erik Kratz and third baseman Todd Frazier, Posey was asked if he gets the itch to play again.
I still love baseball. I love everything about baseball. I watch baseball nonstop. And kind of why I’m thrilled to be in the role I am now with the Giants, because it keeps me really connected to the team still and I feel, even though I’m not in the day-to-day, still having a voice is nice.
But to be honest with you, I don’t miss playing a ton. It just got to the point, I think we all get to it, where it’s diminished returns a little bit with some of the prep work to get ready, the pain of the day-to-day.
I hesitate saying it, because I’m so grateful for the opportunity I had to play. You don’t ever want to come across as not being grateful, but I’m enjoying doing some other things in life now, too.
And while the former MVP was always one of those players who showed the capacities to stick around the game as a manager, he doesn’t have much interest in that, either.
“No, I don’t,” Posey said. “We all know the time commitment to that, right? That’s probably more than a player. So I don’t.”
It’s not hard to understand why Posey, who spent an enormous portion of his life in a squat, is enjoying being away from the game. No other position in baseball wears on the knees like being a catcher, and that’s separate from the toll of an MLB season that can last more than eight months.
